Tunisian crafts: what to bring back from your stay?
Tunisia has an extremely rich artisanal tradition, passed down from generation to generation. Far from standard souvenirs, here are the real treasures of local crafts to bring back from your trip.
The ceramics of Nabeul or Sejnane
Pottery is king in Tunisia. You will find two main styles: Nabeul ceramics, very colorful, glazed and decorated with geometric or floral motifs; and Sejnane pottery, shaped by women, recognized by UNESCO, which is distinguished by its raw, hand-modeled appearance, with natural ocher and black tones.
Olive wood
Tunisian artisans work olive wood with great skill. Very durable and naturally antibacterial, it is perfect for kitchen utensils, cutting boards or bowls. Each piece is unique thanks to the grains of the wood.
The fouta
This large cotton towel, historically used in hammams, has become the ideal summer companion. Light, absorbent and drying very quickly, it serves as a beach towel, sofa throw or even tablecloth. Prefer those hand-woven with hand-knotted fringes.
Local products
Tunisia is one of the world's leading producers of olive oil. A bottle of extra-virgin oil, often fruity and sweet, makes a great gift. Don't leave without some artisanal harissa, orange blossom water or delicious Deglet Nour dates from southern Tunisia.
