Gammarth or La Marsa: which one should you stay in?

Ten minutes' drive apart, La Marsa and Gammarth share the finest stretch of coastline north of Tunis. Both have the sea, the sun and good food. Yet a holiday in one feels nothing like a holiday in the other. After years of hosting travellers in both, here is how we help our guests decide.

La Marsa: a town that lives all year round

La Marsa is a real town, not a seaside resort. Once the summer retreat of the beys of Tunis, it has kept its old villas, its market, its bakeries and a seafront promenade where everyone meets in the evening. You live on foot here: the beach, the cafés, the restaurants and the shops are a short walk away, wherever you stay. And out of season the town never empties, which also makes it the right pick for a long stay or remote work in the sun.

Gammarth: space and quiet

Follow the coast road north and the apartment buildings give way to large villas and hotels set along the bay. Gammarth is residential, green and noticeably calmer. This is where you find the big houses with gardens and pools, wider and quieter beaches, and evenings when all you hear is cicadas. The trade-off is simple: few shops within walking distance, so a car is close to essential.

Beaches: a draw, but a different game

La Marsa's beach is a bay of fine sand in the middle of town: family friendly and lively, with ice-cream sellers and cafés a step away. Gammarth's beaches are wider and quieter, lined with beach clubs where you rent a sunbed and a parasol for the day. Easy swimming and a neighbourhood feel on one side, open space and elbow room on the other.

Restaurants and going out

La Marsa wins on buzz: historic cafés like the Saf-Saf, fish restaurants along the corniche, ice-cream parlours, and a gentle nightlife that stretches out in summer. Gammarth plays a different tune, with more upscale tables, often right on the water, like the famous Baie des Singes at the foot of the cape. And the two are ten minutes apart by taxi: nothing forces you to choose your dinner when you choose your accommodation.

What about budget?

In La Marsa the offer is mostly flats and townhouses: the best value on this coast, especially for two to four people. In Gammarth you rent bigger: entire villas with pools, built for large families or groups of friends. The nightly rate is higher, but per person a shared villa quickly becomes reasonable.

• A couple or a small family who wants everything within walking distance: La Marsa, no hesitation.
• A group of friends or a big family after a villa with a pool: Gammarth.
• A long stay or remote work: La Marsa, for its year-round town life.

Either way you are about twenty minutes from Tunis-Carthage airport, ten from Sidi Bou Said and fifteen from the ruins of Carthage. That is what makes this coast easy to love: you choose a mood, not a compromise.
