3-day itinerary: the best of Tunis and its surroundings
Three days are enough to get a good overview of the contrasts of the Tunisian capital, between ancient history, medieval streets and the gentle seaside lifestyle. Here is a balanced program.
Day 1: Immersion in the heart of the Medina
Start with the Medina of Tunis. Enter through Bab el Bhar and go up towards the Zitouna mosque. Take the time to stroll through the souks (Attarine, Chéchias). Have lunch in an old palace transformed into a restaurant to taste authentic couscous or brik. In the afternoon, go back down Avenue Bourguiba, lined with Art Deco buildings, to have a coffee at the legendary Municipal Theater.
Day 2: The stones of Carthage and the blue of Sidi Bou Said
In the morning, direction Carthage. Visit the Antonine Baths and climb Byrsa Hill for the view. Plan lunch at the port of Sidi Bou Said (below the village). In the afternoon, go back to the famous blue and white village. It's time to enjoy a pine nut tea at the Café des Délices while waiting for the sunset.
Day 3: Relaxation in La Marsa and Gammarth
Time to relax. Go for a stroll on the corniche of La Marsa, eat a bambalouni (sugar donut) and enjoy the beach. For lunch, try one of the fish restaurants by the sea. In the afternoon, if you are looking for peace and quiet, head to the developed beaches of Gammarth. In the evening, Saf-Saf Square in La Marsa offers a lively local atmosphere ideal for ending your stay.
